Tasting notes

Soft and supple, the wine tastes like wild strawberry, violet, hibiscus, savory sage, cassis, and boysenberry. It’s a pure joyful expression of old-vine, California Zin.

Production
Viticulture

The Matern vineyard is in the Talmage Bench area of Mendocino. It was planted in the 1930’s on gravelly loam soil. The old vines are both head-trained and dry-farmed by the Matern family who live on the property. The vineyard is cer􀆟fied CCOF Organic and Demeter Biodynamic.

Vinification

We hand-picked the vineyard when the grapes had ripened to a potential of 13% alcohol and destemmed them into a stainless-steel tank. We allowed the fermentation to happen naturally with native yeast and maintain a temperature around 85 degrees. When fermentation was complete, we pressed the grapes into neutral French oak where it went through malolactic. We bottled after 12 months.
